{"id":2072,"date":"2012-03-19T21:58:22","date_gmt":"2012-03-19T19:58:22","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.luxorbis.org\/friedensplattform.at\/?p=2072"},"modified":"2012-03-19T21:58:22","modified_gmt":"2012-03-19T19:58:22","slug":"rome-italy-boycott-action-condemning-the-use-of-culture-to-cover-israeli-crimes","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.friedensplattform.at\/?p=2072","title":{"rendered":"Rome, Italy: Boycott Action Condemning the Use of Culture to Cover Israeli Crimes"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Published here, in Italian and English:<br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/stopagrexcoitalia.org\/news\/285-cortoons.html\" target=\"_blank\">http:\/\/stopagrexcoitalia.org\/news\/285-cortoons.html<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Rome, Italy: Boycott Action Condemning the Use of Culture to Cover Israeli Crimes<\/p>\n<p>On Sunday, March 18, 2012, at the Cortoons Festival of Rome, a group of 20 activists of the<br \/>\nmovement for boycott, divestment and sanctions (BDS) against Israel requested, and were<br \/>\ngranted by the organizers, the possibility to speak prior to the presentation by Hanan<br \/>\nKaminski, director of the school of animation of the Bezalel Academy of Jerusalem.<\/p>\n<p>The festival took place just meters away from the monument commemorating Rachel Corrie,<br \/>\na US activist killed in Gaza on March 16, 2003 by an Israeli bulldozer while attempting to<br \/>\nprevent the demolition of a Palestinian home.<\/p>\n<p>The BDS activists informed the audience that the participation of Bezalel, with the<br \/>\nsponsorship and financial support of the Israeli Embassy in Italy, represents one of many<br \/>\nattempts by Israel to use culture to rebrand its image and divert attention from policies of<br \/>\noccupation, colonialism and apartheid.<\/p>\n<p>In 2005, Nissim Ben-Sheetrit of Israel&#8217;s Foreign Ministry stated: &#8222;We see culture as a<br \/>\npropaganda tool of the first rank, and we do not differentiate between propaganda and<br \/>\nculture.&#8220;<\/p>\n<p>Artists who accept funding from the Israeli Ministry of Foreign Affairs are required to sign a<br \/>\ncontract which states that the artist &#8222;is aware that the purpose of ordering services from him<br \/>\nis to promote the policy interests of the State of Israel via culture and art, including<br \/>\ncontributing to creating a positive image for Israel.&#8220;<br \/>\n(<a href=\"http:\/\/www.haaretz.com\/putting-out-a-contract-on-art-1.250388\" target=\"_blank\">http:\/\/www.haaretz.com\/putting-out-a-contract-on-art-1.250388<\/a>)<\/p>\n<p>The activists condemned the use of art to cover the crimes of Israel, reminding the public that<br \/>\nthe Israeli Embassy, representing the Government of Israel, also &#8222;sponsored&#8220; the recent<br \/>\nIsraeli airstrikes in Gaza that killed 28 Palestinians and wounded 80, the demolition of 24,000<br \/>\nPalestinian homes, the detention without charge of more than 300 Palestinian political<br \/>\nprisoners, the Apartheid Wall and illegal settlements, the confiscation of Palestinian land and<br \/>\nthe over 1400 civilians killed in Gaza during Operation Cast Lead, including 500 children.<\/p>\n<p>The words of the activists were greeted with warm applause from the audience and several<br \/>\npeople left the theatre along with the activists.<\/p>\n<p>The Palestinian appeal for BDS calls for a boycott of Israeli businesses as well as its cultural<br \/>\nand academic institutions until Israel complies with international law and human rights.<\/p>\n<p>In solidarity with the Palestinian people.
