Diskussion: Syrien: gestern, heute, morgen

Vier Jahre nach Kriegsausbruch gleicht Syrien einem humanitären Trümmerfeld. Aus Protesten gegen das Regime Bashar al-Assads ist ein komplexer Krieg geworden, der die ganze Region mitzureißen droht. Gegenwärtig sind mehr als 200.000 Tote und zwölf Millionen Flüchtlinge zu beklagen – neun Millionen davon sind Binnenflüchtlinge.
Die Entwicklungen in Syrien werfen viele Fragen auf: Wie gestaltet sich die aktuelle politische Lage? Wo liegen die Wurzeln des Konflikts, und wie kam es zum Erstarken des IS? Welche Rolle spielt die EU im Syrienkrieg? Haben friedenspolitische Initiativen vor Ort eine Chance? Und wie kann eine friedliche Zukunft im multiethnischen 20-Millionen-Land aussehen?
Es diskutieren der Friedensforscher Maximilian Lakitsch (Österr. Studienzentrum für Frieden und Konfliktlösung / Burg Schlaining) und der syrische Theologe Ephrem Aboud Ishac (Forschungszentrum Buch- und Schrifterbe / Karl-Franzens Universität Graz).

SYRIA: past, present, future
In its four years of war Syria has deteriorated to a vast expanse of humanitarian debris. Protests against the oppressive regime of Bashar al-Assad turned into a complex war which today threatens to jeopardize the entire region. The toll so far is an estimated 200,000 dead and 2.5 million Syrian refugees of which nine million are displaced within Syria.
The alarming developments in Syria raise many questions. What is the current political situation? What are the roots of the conflict and how can the upsurge of the Islamic State-IS be explained? What is the stand and role of the European Union in the war in Syria? Do peace policy initiatives on the ground have a chance to succeed? What could be the design of a peaceful future of Syria as a multi-ethnic nation of 20 million people?
A critical discussion of peace researcher Maximilian Lakitsch (Austrian Research Center for Peace and Conflict Resolution / Burg Schlaining) with the Syrian theologian Ephrem Aboud Ishac (Research Center Written Heritage, University of Graz)
